| Probably imported into Canada in the 1962 period, also sold in red. RCA-USA was offering transistor radios around this time too but the transistors are 2n4xx numbers. Runs on 4 AA cells. The case is made of the bad plastic of that era. Colours are green and cream. I don't know what the hole in the top was for, so I plugged it with a headphone jack. There are 2 true headphone jacks in the shadows on the left side -- one cuts out the speaker when plugged, the other doesn't. The PCB is phenolic with quite crude features, and labelling is confined to identifying the loopstick wires. The transistor base leads have spaghetti on them "just in case". The transistor lineup is: mixer, osc, 1st IF, second IF, preamp, driver, final (2). The transistors are 2SA30, 2SA31, 2SA32 and 2SB32. Audio is transformer coupled and the final is classic push-pull. Two diodes: detector and AGC. All germanium devices. A device in the emitter common lead of the push-pull circuit may be a diode or a thermistor. The dial is strung conventionally, and the main tuning condenser has anti-backlash gearing. The condenser is typical of cheap Asian radios -- inside a clear plastic cube with poly insulated plates. The volume control does not appear to have audio taper. |
